Hope For A Home..........

Oh my goodness, I just realized I haven't posted on this blog for nearly TWO months!! GEESH I am really slacking these days.  I am so sorry, forgive me?  Great!  Lets move on :).

I have been given some devastating news concerning our "fill in parents".  I call them this because we really have no contact with either of our parents at all and haven't for quite some time.  The two are truly a great blessing to us and our children.  My kids adore, and love these two kind souls and are out of the mind excited EVERY time we get to see them. These two have stepped up and have become not only parent figures in our lives but best friends.  They are the most genuine, loving, giving, warm, non judgmental, people I/we have EVER come across in our lives. I will tell you their story, however out of respect for them and their privacy I will change their names, I hope you understand.

John and Lisa have been married for over 30 years and have raised 8 amazing children. They have 10 grandchildren and have graciously adopted my family into their lives about 2 years ago. Which would bring the total up to 10 children, and 15 grandchildren.  When they first were married they took every dime they had and bought 7 precious acres of land and put a double wide mobile home on that land and have lived there and made it their home for the past 30 years.  They raised and loved each of those 8 children and all of those grandchildren in this home.  It really isn't much, but it is very cozy and holds so much love, and more memories than I can even begin to imagine.  Their children have grown to be great, contributing members of society and some of which have cute families of their own.  They are all very close to each other and get together as much as possible and always on Sunday for a huge buffet style day.  They put out a feast and everyone comes over to catch up, kids play, and people laughing.

About 2 years ago John and Lisa, who both had worked and owned part of a family business was forced to leave.  The other members of the family got greedy, they had a falling out, and forced both John and Lisa to leave permanently and with NOTHING!  Now when I say nothing that is what I mean, absolutely not 2 pennies to rub together; nothing!  They are both very close to retirement age and no one wants to hire him. When he hits retirement age it will not be enough to sustain them month to month.  They still have 3 children at home one still in high school.  She has been able to find odds and ends to try and make ends meet and they fall short every month.  She has had her wages garnished relentlessly, and it makes it difficult to buy the necessities with the left overs.  Her 3 children work when they can find it and the gas money to get to and from and they give their paychecks to their parents to help.

I don't delve too much into this painful situation and they themselves don't even know how, or why this really happened.  Sadly they are still reeling 2 years later about the shoulda, woulda, coulda's.  About 2-3 months after they were forced from their jobs and only income they were getting served with court papers, yes their family was suing them.  They made the difficult decision to refinance their home and property in hopes of hiring a lawyer, and fighting these suits.  This home had been paid off for a while and when they took this money it put immense financial strain on them.  They hired a lawyer and that took a huge chunk of money, the lawyer fell through and kept trying to get more, and more money, which they didn't have.  They lawyer left them high and dry and out all the money they had invested in him.  They were heart broken, and all had seemed lost at this point.  They took what they had left paid some of the law suits, bought some seeds and began growing a small garden to help them get food for not a lot of cost.

Today they are at risk of losing their home, their everything.  They are swimming in debt, and lawsuits, having any wage they earn taken.  They go months without propane to heat their water, so to bathe they heat water on their stove and take a quick washing that way.  Their roof is faltering, leaking, and shingles are pretty much non existent any more.  Because of this their 2nd bathroom has been left unusable from the water damage.  They cannot afford to buy clothes, shoes, and groceries are very limited.  They have had the same pair of jeans for years and Lisa just mends everything over again, and again, and even again. Their children, including us are doing what we can to help however we each have families and our own that we need to provide for as well.

I don't want to see them lose their home, the place with all the memories and the place where everyone goes to have fun.  They will be homeless if this house is ever taken.  They will have no where to go or stay.  I want to help them SAVE this little piece of Heaven for them.  I want to help them have some place to call theirs, a place to put their feet up and call home.  We all know how important that is, and we all know how difficult life and this place can be.  Sadly these aren't the only ones who are losing their homes, memories, and little pieces of Heaven.  I want to help everyone, and I thought I could start with two people who I think deserve a break and some help right now in their lives.

So I'm sure you are thinking "I can't possibly help, I don't have that money laying around either." Or maybe even some of you thinking "Why should I help these people I don't even know?"

Here are my answers; You don't need a lot of money to help just $1 is enough.  If we can reach 100,000 people and each of those people donate just $1 that really adds up!  If you share this with all of your friends and family, and they in turn share it with theirs and so on. We can reach 100,000 people, I know we can reach far more than that and help so many more families on our path to helping one at a time!  If you can't donate I understand, but could you please spare a quick moment to share this on your Facebook Timeline, Facebook Page, Blog, Pinterest, any where you can think of so that we may reach as many people as possible?

Why should you help a stranger?  Compassion, the satisfaction of knowing that you are making a difference in someones life.  Knowing that you are helping someone have a decent warm shower, or meal.  Knowing that if you lift this burden off of their shoulders that God or your divine being will bless you.  You will show kindness, and love just like He shows those to us daily.

I have set up an account through PayPal called Hope For Homes that will aid us in receiving and giving these donations to families. There is a DONATE button on this page under Hope For Homes.  You may click this and choose your donation amount.  Remember even $1 helps tremendously.
This is a non profit that I am starting EVERY last cent will be given to families in need.

Thank you for your time, and kindness.

xoxo,

Ali

**Do you know a family in need like the one above?  Please let me know and I will do my best to get them the help they need as well!

Survival Bracelet anyone?!?

Good afternoon Hair Brainer's :) My oldest daughter Jaicee came to me the other day with tears in her eyes after seeing/watching a St. Jude's commercial on t.v. and asked if we could donate any money to help out these families and babies who have to go through such trials. I told her that at this time we didn't as a family have any extra to give. We brainstormed about how we could come up with funds to help these families and children at St. Jude and other hospitals around the country. We both decided we could make Survival Bracelets, and key fobs as a way to earn money for donation! We will be accepting custom orders as well. We have colors, and we can make them in ANY size! She has been working her little guts out to make these and 100% of profits will go to St. Jude's Hospital, Primary Children's Hospital, JDRF, AND to help military families (we couldn't decide on just one!).

Bracelets will be $12 + $1.50 for shipping.
Key Fobs will be $10 + $1.50 for shipping.
What is a survival bracelet/key fob you ask? Well let me just tell you! Not only are the fun and stylish, the can also help out tremendously in a survival situation! These all have between 5-8 FEET of 550lb cord! These are wonderful for hunters, firefighters, police officers, hikers, ANY sport enthusiasts, or and every day person. The can help get you, a friend, or a stranger out of dangerous situations if they occur. Consider picking one of these up not only for a great donation cause, but for safety as well.

Meet MY lil.............

Minion!  Yep this is my baby isn't he....er....the hat just darling??
Again this was a special request from a great friend of mine, who trusted me completely to do
her a lil hat like this without even a teaser picture!  When I finished this one I literally squealed out loud, and yes almost peed my pants a little....hahaha!  But really!  How could you not??
I brainstormed and decided just one eye on this lil one and maybe just maybe I have his brother the two eyed minion in the works.....hmmm

I had a giveaway not too long ago..........

and the winner Beth K. requested a cotton newsboy, so it can be worn year round, with texture in a neutral color.  I suggested maybe a flower and agreed with her that tan color would be perfect!
Here is the hat I made for her:

I so love how this turned out!
The flower is on a clip so it can be removed when she doesn't want to wear it and can be put on when she does!  It is airy, light, fun and sophisticated!  She really could wear this anywhere!
Hope you love it Beth!

A cute custom order......

I was approached a few days ago with a request to have an Elmo hat and diaper cover set made for a newborn.  I quickly replied that I would LOVE to do it for her.
I had to do some brainstorming for this set as I didn't have a pattern and I knew I could do it myself, maybe even write the pattern for him as I go along.
So that's what I did I took myself to the yarn store, yes I have at least 8 (probably more like 16) skeins of red yarn, but I can always use an excuse to go to the yarn store and feed my deep addiction.  I found the PERFECT fuzzy puppet looking yarn and after I put my kids to bed I started.  I finished it in just one night and I am super proud of how he turned out.
Here is a (out of focus) photo of him finished.

CUTE RIGHT?!?!

I am in LOVE

As most of you know I made a New Years Resolution NOT to buy ONE more pattern until I had made at least one of each of the patterns that I already own.   Wellllllll.......sigh........ok, ok I BLEW it!! I saw this pattern for sale and just HAD to have it!  I knew from the minute I saw this one that it was going to be darling for sure!

As I was working this hat up for the very first time I thought "This will look so dang CUTE!"
As I continued to hook and hook and hook some more it just kept growing on my more and more.

I finally finished the last stitch and literally just about PEED my pants!  I knew that I was absolutely in LoVe with this hat and I couldn't wait to make MORE!  So I have now finished one for each of my girls, AND of course one for myself!  That is a total of 4 so far, and I am working on more right now!

It is heartbreaking to me that my pictures JUST don't do this (or any of my hats) justice!
It should be a crime, or maybe I should just be more careful.......nah,  it's just a crime.

I will be taking mine to sunny Las Vegas this weekend to wear around at the pool :)

I came across this just now and it needed to be shared.........

NEW TO HBC....... BUY BACK !!

So I have had this idea circulating through my already full brain and I finally have a second to sit at the computer and put it down in writing.  I am really hoping that this will work out to be a win win situation for everyone!

I am going to offer a "Buy Back" program for those of you who have a LIKE NEW hat or hats of mine (HBC's) that no longer fit, or wanting a change of scenery.

I will be donating these hats to hospitals, and various charities.  I will no be re-selling these items on my FB page.  I have so many emails each day needing donations and such and I just don't have enough time in one day to donate to all of them, so I thought I would figure out a way that I could give back and have it be a "win" situation for my friends (fans you are my friends ;)), and help out those in need.

Here is how this will work:

If you are interested in taking advantage of this opportunity please email me at hairbrainedc@yahoo.com with the subject "Buy Back", please list the item you are wanting to send back and a photo if/when possible. These items need to be clean and in good condition as I will be giving them to others.  I will be washing all items so they are clean before I donate, however they can't have any permanent blemishes. I will then give you the information needed to ship that item to me.  When I receive the item in like new condition I will then give you HBC store credit of $5 per item.  You can use this credit immediately or you can save it up and have $$ to spend here, or on etsy.

I will also be accepting others items that you are no longer in use of and will give you store credit for those as well.  Those terms will be discussed in an email depending on the item.  These items as well will be donated and need to be in good condition with no permanent marks or blemishes.

If you are a fellow crafter (crochet, headbands, knitter, etc.) and would like to send some items to be donated please feel free to email me (hairbrainedc@yahoo.com) and we can agree on a store credit that way as well.

I will also have this information on my blog www.hairbraincreations.blogspot.com in case you can't get back here for some reason :)

Thank you all so much!

xoxo

New Year, New Changes....

Friends welcome to 2012!

As I reflect on the last 10 months of starting HBC, yes I know it's only been 10 months,
I am still in shock and awe EVERY single day!  People really want to buy MY hats, and things?!?!
This makes me more giddy that a love sick school girl!
I'm not entirely sure if y'all know exactly how HBC came to be or how I got started,
so I will give you a lil insight as to why I'm in disbelief daily.

Back in the Dark Ages when I was attending high school, I happened to take a photography class in hopes that it would give me a quick ad easy credit to graduation.  Little did I know that, THAT class would change the course of my life.  I walked into Mrs. Harrington's Beginners Photography class with a high school chip on my shoulder, you know the one that most of us have when we are just trying to get the heck outta there and if this was how I was going to get my art credit than lets hurry up and get it over with?
Well, believe it or not I actually enjoyed that class, cameras, candid moments, memories, stories, etc;. Photography had become my ultimate passion!  I couldn't live without a camera in my hands at all times.  Of course remember this was the Dark Ages so we had FILM, for all you youngsters out there this was a roll of reflective metals that was placed in the camera and you only had 24-36 chances to get a great photo, there was no Photoshop or Light Room it was all on you!  You couldn't go through and just delete the ones that didn't turn out, nope you had to pay to develop even the crappy ones.
When I got married I had saved up enough money to buy me a 35 mm (film) Cannon SLR.  I took and lugged that thing every where along with about 10 rolls of film at all times.  Anyhoo, needless to say I have about 10 bazillion pictures of anything and everything you could ever think of.  Well after a couple years that camera gave up on me and it was WAYYYY out dated.  I couldn't afford to buy a new digital one so my passion, my photography, went to the way side.
I had tried many other hobbies, however NOTHING could compare to the satifaction of photos!  I began researching and saving, researching and saving some more, and I was finally able to invest in my first digital SLR, and OH BOY was I in LOVE I had to re-learn EVERYTHING, but it came back to me pretty quickly.  I started messing around taking photos again and started having people ask me to take their family photos, newborn, children, you get the idea.  I realized that the kind of photography that I gravitaed towards and that I love more than anything was newborns, and birth stories.  These amazing little creatures are perfect, and sweet, and smell delicious, I could go on for decades about these lil munchkins.  Well as I was perfecting my craft and finding my style I started searching Etsy for props, blankets, pails, boxes, etc; and I came across some A.DOR.ABLE. animal hats!  I tried to purchase some but the wait was just too long.  MONTHS of waiting so I thought to myself I wonder if I could teach myself to do one or two that I could use in my photos.

AND SO IT BEGINS.

I bought a book and some hooks and started, it took me a total of 3 hours to teach myself every stitch, abbreviation, and how to read a pattern all on my own (proud moment).
I was now ADDICTED, and with my OCD I was in BIG trouble.

I had made ONE, yes just one and I was forever hooked.  I posted a cruddy, blurry, horribly ligthted cell phone picture of the hat and had 20 orders within 2 days.

Me:  "Oh my GOSH!"
Hubby:  "What?!?"
Me:  "babe, look at all these emails....!!!"
Hubby:  "sigh, by the way you sounded I thought it was something important.."
Me:  "thanks for you undying support SHEESH  (chuckle)!"
Hubby:  "what are they for?"
Me:  "hats (non nonchalantly)"
Hubby:  "hats?  Whose hats?  Your hats?  Since when do you make hats?"
Me:  "Since Thursday."
Hubby:  "(laughs out loud)  Okay, whatever floats your boat."

Before I could  finish those 20 orders, I had 10 more then 10 more, and so on, and so on.

HBC has been such a huge blessing to me and my family and I take extreme care and put a lot of love into each piece.  I never let one leave my hands until it is absolutely PERFECT in my eyes.  I love each one of my customers, and friends, and my family you all have been so supportive and kind.
So to you I say THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!

And my family says thank you!  You allow me to be a mommy to my 5 kids and wife to my hubby.

Ali, Byron, Jaicee, Pressley, McKaydie, Rykker, and Zyrik

CHANGES.  The title to this post was New Year, New Changes.

Through many discussions with my husband and my children we have mutually decided that I will only take 6 custom orders a month.

Now that doesn't mean that I won't be crocheting in the mean time that just means that I will get to work on some of the items that I need to for Ready To Ship, family, and close friends and most important donations.  I love donating my work to those in need.  I get extreme joy in seeing people happy, even if it is just for a split second.  Those smiles mean the world to me.  I will have a list that you can add your name to and I will just go down the list.  If I get extra time I may work on those who are next in line.

I will also be putting in place a tiny price increase.  I offer FREE SHIPPING on all my items to everyone in US and Canada.  For me to continue to offer this option I need to implement this.  Thank you for understanding.

Here is to a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2012.
